From the Antiquity to the Painting of Miniature

"In Principio erat Verbum, et Verbum erat apud Deum, et Deus erat Verbum".

" At the beginning was the word, and the word was by God, and God was the word"

Three times "WORD"! God created the world through the language - a singular variant of the several mythical creation of our earth.

For a long time, 20.000 before our chronology, people carved drawings into the stone of the caverns of Lescaux (France) for the first time. And the human race needed another 17 thousands years until a very important chapter in his story began: the time of the handwriting.

One can image that people, who were inventing the first characters of writing or scratched some drawings on the stones, wanted to make their life eternal.

For one million of years people were born and have died: but they have only been writing for 6000 years.

The Origin of the Miniature

The DEVELOPMENT of the ART of the MINIATURE is a very long story.

The miniatures, which show portraits of people, differ from the miniatures painted in the books of the middle Ages. These miniatures painted on the books had to decorate the pages with illustrations and ornaments.

The "miniatures of persons" are meant to be "remembrances" of the painted person her- or himself and show exact details of the appearance of the represented person. They were painted as a souvenir and a gift for another person.

Already during the times of the Romans, in the first era and in the time of Augustus, little portraits engraved on gems were very popular. Augustus himself carried gem with the picture of his hero and example "Alexander Magnus" along. The imperator Commodus had the picture of his mistress Marcia on a ring.

In the follow 1000 years after the end of the Roman Empire the portraits of people were forgotten. The artists were occupied with Christian subjects.
