Simón Bolívar in Civilian Dress
This well-executed miniature by Marisa Schmitt-Viassone (b. Turin, Italy, 1938) is an exact copy of an original work by the great Colombian artist José María Espinosa (1769-1883), now owned by the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino in Santa Marta, Colombia. Another copy by Schmitt-Viassone is at the Museo Nacional de Colombia in Bogota. Watercolour on ivory, painted 1958-1960.
Simón Bolívar in Haiti
This miniature was painted by Marisa Schmitt-Viassone (b. Turin, Italy, 1938). It was based on a
considerably larger pastel drawing on paper owned by the John Boulton Foundation in Caracas, Venezuela,
possibly executed in Port-au-Prince in 1815. Very little documentation has survived from Bolívar's
relatively brief period of exile in Haiti. Watercolour on ivory, in an oval gold frame, painted 1960s.
Purchased by Mr. Bromsen at a Parke-Bernet auction in New York City XI/29/1967
